Thanks for the response. It gives me feedback to sharpen what I’m trying to say, and let’s me know exactly where I’ve screwed up.
“The truth as far as I or anyone can tell is that neither culture no race is sufficient to explain how a society thrives or falls.”
Should have been:
“The truth as far as I [or anyone who has looked at this problem long, hard, and while trying to jettison their biases] can tell is that neither culture no race is sufficient to explain how a society thrives or falls. Although a lot of racialists do endorse racial determinism, and a lot of the liberal end of society endorse cultural determinism, they are almost certainly both wrong.”
I’m quite aware that there are a lot of dyed-in-the-wool crazies who honestly believe that the only important factor to civilization is your genes/race. I apologize for a poorly phrased line that implied that I don’t believe that racial determinists exist. That particular rhetorical flourish was unnecessary, and if thoughtlessly made, then no less disingenuous. I would like to reiterate, they are wrong, but so are those who claim that culture utterly trumps race.
I would also like to politely ask where exactly I criticized you for only using peer-reviewed literature. Because I like that about your arguments, you’re quite right that it does restrict the odds of you being catastrophically wrong (it doesn’t completely immunize you from catastrophic wrongness, especially in hotly debated subjects where there is a mass of articles on either side of an issue, for example race and IQ). What I did criticize you for was not looking broadly enough at the peer-reviewed literature some of which contradicts (or at least may contradict) some of your claims, and I used a GNXP article link to concisely link to a set of papers that do just that.
As for the politics part, I’m actually pretty much in agreement with you. I follow SSC semi-religiously, and I’m happy to publicly acknowledge that blacks have it harder than whites in America after adjusting for IQ and educational levels. I’m also more than willing to consider the likelihood that given human predisposition for tribalism and making snap judgements based on appearances, racism is pretty much a given for any society in which you have visually distinct minority and majority groups (blacks are poorly treated in much of East Asia as well for example). So yes blacks have to deal with racism in America, which is quite apparent when you talk to a black person for more than five minutes (which given I’m going to a public university, and working for a social justice oriented NGO is pretty much a given).
I’m also fairly happy that you’ve at least made peace with the fact that to some degree or another ethnic tribalism is a given for most countries. It’s not a good thing, but fighting human nature tends to be a lot less effective than subverting it in your favor.
When it comes to immigration I’m, honestly I’m ambivalent largely because of what you bring up. It just doesn’t have all that much of a impact on my day-to-day. That being said I don’t think it’s necessarily bad for this sort of thing to get thought about, researched, and debated. Not affecting me personally, isn’t the same thing as not mattering in the big picture. Nuclear power doesn’t mean a damn thing to me, but it’s still fairly important.
On the IQ part, I’m not suggesting that we abandon IQ, just that we acknowledge that the Flynn effect is poorly understood. As for the rate of increase, granted. I still suspect we should probably put that particular point aside as being ambiguous at best.
I can’t speak for Wade, having never read any of his books, but I happily stand by my assertion that race is a far more flexible and precise measure than the simple 5 group assertion.
And for the last, well yes I meant terrible not as in Reinhard Heydrich terrible, I just meant douchebags and/or jerks when I was referring to the Radish’s and Jared Taylor’s of the world. For the more hyperbolic parts I was at least partly responding to your link to the “Germany’s New Neo-Nazi’s” video in the Anti-Racialist Q&A.
